Q: How do your recipes fit into a healthy diet?

A: The Dietary Guidelines for all Americans recommend that you choose a diet that is moderate in fat and sugar. The addition of sugar to foods, especially in beverages and desserts, adds countless empty calories to the diet, so it makes good sense to either curb these foods or choose healthier alternatives. By using recipes that are reduced in sugar, fat and calories, you can enjoy all the foods and sweet treats you love – and still eat healthfully.

 

Q: Will these recipes help me lose weight?

A: They can. All the recipes in my books have significantly less calories than their traditional counterparts – and this can help you lose weight. In fact even most of the desserts average less than 200 calories per serving (and of course calories still count when you are trying to lose weight). This is a huge reduction when compared to regular desserts that average 500 calories and more. For example a creamy coffee drink and a piece of coffeecake at your local coffee shop can easily be over 1000 calories. My Frosty Mocha and a piece of Blueberry Buckle cake is only 221 calories. If you were to make the switch just 5 times you would lose a pound! In addition to lowering your total caloric intake, saving calories on sugar or fats can allow you to spend your calories on other more nutritious foods.

 

Q: Are these treats healthy for kids?

A: Absolutely. My kids were two of my best tasters (and boy, are kids tough critics). Kids who are overweight or have type 2 diabetes can especially benefit from enjoying healthy foods and sweets with less sugar, fat and calories. All children need calories for growth however and you may want to check with a registered dietitian or physician if you are uncertain of your child's needs.

 

Q: You mention that the recipes are low in fat, what about and saturated and trans-fat?

A: All recipes are carefully reduced in saturated fat and minimized in trans-fatty acids as well as the total amount of fat being at what is considered a heart healthy level.

 

Q: What information is included in the nutritional analysis?

A: The nutritional analysis includes not only calories, carbohydrate, protein and fat but also grams of saturated fat, fiber and milligrams of sodium. For Weight Watchers, you will find Weight Watcher points comparisons in all the books with the exception of Unbelievable Desserts with Splenda (thanks to the many Weight Watchers recommended my first book and told me how incredibly low in “points” they were. They inspired me to add these calculations to the proceeding books).
